Can you find the ACLU and NYCLU in the fight to protect our kids and their PII?
Look closely. Thats right…can you find them?????
They are not in the pic! I was able to find Waldo, though. No comfort.
Therein lies the problem.
Where in the world are they?
The ACLU has advocated for privacy rights and is pushing for privacy upgrades but to my knowledge they have not addressed the fact that NYSED intends to collect PII nor have they discussed InBloom and student data concerns.
While suits have been recently filed, those are individual plaintiff parents filing on behalf of their children. While we know that they speak for all of us, the fact is class actions MUST be filed to make a difference ASAP. Class suits would easily be within the province of the ACLU/NYCLU to handle. Most parents I know are having a hard time finding legal counsel despite the fact that parents are prepared to fight. Attorneys, including myself, know its an uphill battle to handle alone.
Kudos to the Data Dragon Slayers! We need more parents and more lawyers for a class action!
Advocacy groups like the ACLU, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Americans for Tax Reform have formed a coalition that supports bipartisan legislation by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) to update ECPA and ar currently pushing the Obama Administration to support this legislation in an effort to upgrade privacy rights and deter governmental intrusion.
But what about our kids???!
I think we need to start a letter/emailing campaign to ACLU/NYCLU. Please contact the ACLU and NYCLU and demand that they get involved to protect our children in this fight!
